Be safe, Capt! It looks like a pretty nasty 1-2 punch coming your way.

Sea Hunt Video wrote:An interesting factoid. "My bible" (the Weather Channel, loved by all, especially John S. ) reported last night that the last time there were two (2) hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico at the same time was 1935. What an honor it must be for you and Mike and others along the Gulf to members of such a unique "club". :D
Further research shows that we have not yet had two simultaneous hurricanes actually in the Gulf of Mexico since recording started:
"The closest seems to be on Sept 4, 1933, when a major hurricane was over south Florida and another major hurricane was over the western Gulf of Mexico.
  • September 4, 1933
    • Hurricane 8 (landfall in deep South Texas as a major hurricane)
Hurricane 11 (Hurricane 11 weakened to a tropical storm after crossing the Florida Peninsula and briefly entered the Gulf of Mexico near Cedar Key, Florida)
Overlap was very brief, about 4 hours"
(as per KSAT.com)

The good news is that we most likely will NOT break that record this week.

Capt, where are you located? The 1000 CDT peak surge chart only shows up to 4 foot in Pontchartrain.

Yep! Storm surge as far as 30 miles inland! This looks like a repeat of hurricane Michael, just different location.

I have never in my life wanted to be more wrong. When I first posted my bad feelings I thought Laura would be making landfall somewhere in South Florida. Then the next day or so it made a very slight jog to the SW I think around Antigua and Laura came up the south side of PR, Hispaniola and Cuba with nothing to diminish her growing strength.

The 1700 hr NHC/NOAA advisory has Laura at 145 mph :!: :!: :!: with the potential to reach 150 mph BEFORE landfall. From my frame of reference that is close to Hurricane Andrew (24 August 1992) with sustained winds above 160 mph.

Because of water levels, extreme storm surge and flooding will likely be devastating to the area.

The folks along the Texas, Louisiana (Capt Hook and all) , Mississippi and Alabama coastlines will be in my thoughts through the night and tomorrow.
Fair winds,

Roberto

From the last updates I've seen, it looks like the storm surge could easily reach/cross I-10!

My house is in River Ridge, just west of New Orleans.
Kumbaya is in Municipal Yacht Harbor by SYC. That's on Lake Pontchartrain.
The lake is up this evening but I don't think it's by 4'.
The marina is new and has floating docks, which is very nice. No dock lines to adjust.

Great! I hope all goes well for you. I'm watching/listening to "Mike's weather page" currently. Looks like landfall is minutes away.
