Wire/rope halyards are likely very old. You can drop a size and go to all rope halyards. You don’t need a super expensive race cord, Sta-Set X is plenty good for a recreational boat.

Likely not a cause of the loose halyards, but replacing them is a good overwinter project. The size needed is as much a matter of hand grip as stretch... 5/16” is too small, 3/8” feels better.

You can banjo string the main halyard. Hoist, put a turn on the cleat and pull the halyard aft to raise it some more. Take the slack in on the cleat and repeat.

And yes, take apart and inspect the shroud turnbuckles. I have seen older ones collapse and break without appearing weak. There should be no corrosion or dirt built up inside, and the threads not worn. Replace as the wallet allows.

I added a winch handle holder to the mast and parked a cheap handle under the boom. Easy to use and stow for hoisting.

I agree double braid works fine. And the size for easy handling as Maine Buz is good advice too. In fact we use Marlow prestretched 10mm (3/8) double braid for all the halyards on the Far Reach and she is a CD 36. I may move over to New England Ropes when I replace them. But that’s a small thing. What you need to check is that the sheave at the mast head can handle the type and size of halyard you want to use. It was probably never wire, but I’d check to be sure. I wire sheave is incompatible with rope halyard.

I used sta-set x a long time ago. I did not like it. It has parallel core construction. It does not coil well. I recommend you stick with double braid or if the money is burning a hole in your pocket move up to some kind of spectra blend core under a polyester cover. Stay away from high end race boat halyards. Total waste of your money.

I came to this thread late but the fairlead on the deck is where I led my jib sheets when I had a CD25. I think that may be the biggest part of the answer, but there is a lot of other great advice in this thread.

It's amazing how well the 25 stands up to the wind. I sailed mine all over Lake Michigan for 20 years and kept up with the big boys. There were many days on LMCDOA Rondi's where I left with the 30's and 36's and got to the next harbor with them. We maybe worked harder but we held our own.

This is old news, but posted in the spirit of battling the mid-winter blues...

Last fall, I took the excellent advice posted in this thread and made some adjustments to try to solve the luffing jib problem that I found so exasperating. First, Frenchy and I (mostly Frenchy) tightened up on the backstay. It was quite loose. The shrouds were fine, however. I then routed the sheets inside the shrouds instead of outside, which I had erroneously assumed to be the proper position when I bought the boat last spring. The results can be seen here:

I think you will all agree that the result is a major improvement. Thank to all the board members who helped me solve this problem.
