That's good to know about the warranties. The original poster was interested in Mercury for 2 reasons: the dealer availability in his area was better for Mercury, and the Mercury 5 has an internal fuel tank with an optional external tank while the Tohatsu 5 is external only, which isn't practical on the Typhoon. The blocks of the two outboards are the same, but the Mercury and Tohatsu outboards are different.

I ended up getting the 20" Mercury 5hp fwiw.

Not because of the power, but because it has reverse, and the smaller ones don't. I have to reverse out of the slip every time. Doable without reverse, but it would annoy me.

The mercury evidently has an alternator, so at some point I'll see about rigging that up
