This bulletin board, hosted by the CDSOA, Inc., is the on-line meeting place for all Cape Dory owners and groups. We welcome everyone's questions, answers and comments about Cape Dory sailboat
The re-powering was sea-trialed today at Robinhood in Maine (we could not attend). There were a few glitches, including incorrect installation of the throttle/shifter cable; need to re-pitch the new prop; need to order an adapter for the throttle cable from Beta and a few other minor things. Pulling the prop required a short haul, and they are asking the prop vendor for a fast turn-around. Not a problem, for we had not planned moving on the boat for the summer until, at least, June 30.
This being Robinhood's first Beta install (we think), we expected some shake-down issues. Nothing major and we do not plan to rush them, as we want it right, rather than fast.
We'll be going over tomorrow to see what's up.
A few things we hope for from the new mill are less maintenance, reduced smoking, reduced fuel use and quieter operation. But the big thing is less frequent service. With the old engine, we were changing oil every 75 hours, along with the transmission fluid. As we live aboard all summer, this was a lot of fluid changes. With the new Beta, there is a 25 hour break-in trans. fluid change, a 50 hour break-in oil change, then no further changes until 250 hours for the engine oil and a whopping 750 hours for the tranny. Being fussy people, we'll probably change the fluids each fall at haul-out, but we won't miss those mid-cruise fluid changes.
We'll let all of you know how it all goes as the summer progresses.
And Joe, have a great 2017 sailing season! Let us know of your adventures.
