Sharkbait I'll keep that in mind.
We had to postpone. Haven't rescheduled yet.

It worked for me a couple of times. They really try to aid those who they believe to be newbies.
If you are going east; remember to use the Harvey lock going into the Mississippi River. That way you get to go downstream to the industrial canal. If you use the Algiers lock you will have to fight the current going up stream to the industrial canal. Depending upon the rains to the north the Mississippi can be really treacherous or very pleasant. If the flow is high turning the corner into the lock can be a real challenge. Hug the east bank coming downstream. Do not forget to contact river traffic control on the VHF. Those sea going boats are really big and can't get out of your way.

The river level is high right now. I think it crested last week. I can see part of the river and the industrial canal from my office window, a little bit of Lake Pontchartrain too.

A warm and hearty welcome, Captain.
We bought our 31 in '13, after much shopping. She's kept us safe and happy over 1200 miles of cruising, and we're looking forward to many more happy year with her.
We really haven't found any faults, but much to like. She's roomy for an Alberg design, much more so than boats just a bit shorter. A solid, capable boat for almost any use (including sailing to Bermuda, if your name happens to be Walsh).
Enjoy getting to to know your new girl. She'll be a kind and loyal friend.

Re: New Cape Dory Owner
Finally got my boat to her new home.
We left Aransas Pass, TX Monday morning and got to Grand Isle, LA Thursday night about 11.
Spent most of Friday dinking with the cooling system and headed into Barataria Bay Saturday morning. Went through Barataria Bay, up the Barataria Waterway to the ICW. Spent Saturday night at Boomtown (casino) on the ICW and finished the trip through the locks, river, Industrial Canal with its various bridges Sunday and got her tucked away in her new slip about 4 pm Sunday afternoon.
Kevin and Clinton taught me quite a lot about my new boat and sailing her offshore. Quite an adventure and a GREAT learning experience. Two GREAT GUYS to sail with.

Re: New Cape Dory Owner
Going through the locks and bridges was not a problem. Just some delays.
Being in the Mississippi River was a little intimidating. Lots of BIG traffic.
Can't believe my son-in-law and some of his buds kayaked in the river.
