any car battery will do as long as it fits in the space you chose. i have never tried a gel cell battery but i assume it will do just as well but just cost more initially. top-mount posts or side posts again would be determined by available space. i have a NAPA 7556 N battery measuring 9 inches long, 6 inches wide and 10 inches high to the top of the posts. during the winter it is stored in the garage with a "battery tender" attached to keep it charged up.
