Yes, it is possible to raise/lower the mast with only a boom crutch. Having done the ladder technique many times (great), I found that I could just balance the boom on the crutch with one hand while walking forward or aft. It is key to know the center of gravity for the mast, which on mine is right at the light.

I accomplished this for the first time last week (no furler). One helper; one observer. Something worth emphasizing is to loosen all turnbuckle prior to lifting the mast, then tune the rig later. This protects your hardware from stresses and possible damage.
