Your boat was made in New England and your Rum should be also. I would vote for either "Ration" or "Queequeg" from Maine Craft Distilling.

Pusser's supplied rum to the British Navy because they were the lowest bidder, it sure tastes that way. Maybe the double 'tot' of low cost rum issued to those old sailors that caused the collapse of the British empire.

More likely it was taking perfectly fine rum and turning it into grog, with ever increasing proportions of water.

Admirable, for sure. From my point of view, though, so long as they're not making single malt (etc.) in East Taunton, how far over the line I go in procuring spirits seems arbitrary. Be careful though, because it's quite possible they brew beer in East Taunton. (I haven't checked yet, but stay tuned on that one.)

Perhaps if they went with the premium brand, the sailors would have gotten even less rum. Then what?

I'm thinking that context matters here. Cheap liquor served in the cockpit while observing a magnificent sunset might suffice

This thread is so far removed from the subject of Cape Dory sailboats. Yet, given the miserable weather in South Florida I hasten to add yet another response.

Neil, my friend and South Florida "sailing buddy", with all the respect I can muster, you have it backwards. When you are sitting on a boat with a magnificent sunset you want to be sipping the very, very best of the ship's supply of "refreshments". If it is a lousy sunset - rain, clouds, whatever, the ship's supply stock is much less important. Please remember this for when I get to sail on S/V Liquidity.

As for declaring any particular run, "The Official Rum of the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association," that will only happen by putting it to a vote of the board and perhaps a vote of the membership overall, in either case, or perhaps both cases, only if the applicants provide adequate samples for a fair (i.e., "extended") study.

Good idea. You beat me to it.

For the sake of good science, I propose we design a randomized, double blind study to be executed during the next Northeast Fleet cruise. Our data, and recommendations to be presented to a vote of the general membership for adoption. All in favor, say ARRRRGH!!!!

As I sit here with a rum drink in hand and then noticed this entertaining string, I'd have to say that any rum bought in Illinois is better than that bought in Virginia. Its about 20% cheaper out there.

Three cheers for privatizing alcohol sales. Cheers, cheeerrrs, chairrrzz!!
