Are those beautiful, flat belt, pulleys a stock item somewhere or were they custom machined for the engine? I have a 70 Amp Alt on my Universal engine and get a good bit of belt dust with a 3/8" belt. This was supposed to be adequate but I have bought high quality belts and checked alignment and tension but still have some problem. I believe it was also suggested that I could set my regulator to demand less of the Alt but this seems to defeat the purpose. I am running a smart regulator with AGM batteries and want them to take on as much as they can. It seems like the belt is my weak link, Steve.

Thx Maine. I've got everything to change the cabling including the terminal fuses for the battery. The way I've been running it is essentially as if charge was only to house bank, since I never change the switch - just use it as an on/off. Will be good to get it configured properly, and I can't really see a need to charge the start battery via alternator except in the event of some failure of the house bank.

I'm unclear about the emergency disconnect at the alternator but I think it simply removes the hot wire from from battery to the alternator when working on alternator, something you would only do with engine off. You're not talking about switching the exciter wire, which is unnecessary unless external regulator failed?
