When you buy foulies, make sure they already have SOLAS patches on them. Foul weather jackets designed for use in the marine environment do. They also have brightly colored hoods with reflective SOLAS tape on the hood and somewhere about the shoulders. Safety colors are: red, yellow, orange, DayGlo red, yellow, orange, green and pink.

DO NOT try to sew a new piece of SOLAS tape to your old jacket unless you don't mind getting wet. If you sew it on yourself, you'll compromise the jacket's water resistance wherever the needle penetrates the jacket; instead, glue it on with fabric glue. You can purchase a bottle of Tear Mender Fabric & Leather Adhesive from Walmart. There are other brands of waterproof fabric glue.
