Robert:
There's been a lot of discussion about Winchers on this board. Some, like me, swear by them as providing considerable help when singlehanding. Others swear at them.
My set (originally light blue, but fading over the years) has remained on my winches since I first installed them in 2004. I managed to get them on all by myself, but I would not want to go through that ordeal again. (Hot soapy water did the trick.)
Enjoy them. Perhaps you, like me, can avoid spending boat units on self-tailers, at least while we've got some strength left in our hands and arms. (NOTE: If I remember correctly, we're about the same age.)
Have fun.

Re: CD 25D refits
Concerning self tailing winches.
Self tailers forte is not to provide extra heft.
Their forte is providing the ability to let line in or out WITH ONE HAND!!
And I found the blue Winchers just about useless..
We now have Andersen self tailers..

Re: CD 25D refits
Hey... a lot of us swear by those blue winchers... and they do the job for me on Bandolera II. As a single hander, I look for anything that can help me make things easier on the boat, and in a way I can afford without having to go thru bankruptcy. The "blues", even though they still make me use BOTH my hands, are better than having to CLEAT and uncleat those lines.
That maneuver becomes simpler and faster with those winchers. Sure, self-tailers would be nice, but on my 33 CD and the kind of sailing that I do, they become $$ overkill. FWIW.

Re: CD 25D refits
One of Saga's winches is packing it up. So, I will be in the market for a pair soon. I would like to have st winches. I think I have to insist on bronze.
I have been working on a Person Ensign lately (another Alberg design) that I am racing. I just put a pair of Harken 2speed on the Ensign, makes all the difference. I got the winches barely used for 1/2 price. Minneys has some new Lewmars at great prices but not bronze
When I bought Saga, she was a mess. I cleaned her up and made some upgrades and she looked great. I am sorry to say, however, that my cleaning can go just so far. We are pulling the Ensing in May and hope to have it back in the water by fall racing season. Then, it is Saga's turn. She will get the following up fit:
halyards (a re-do from 3 years ago-I should have used better line)
paint inside
decks sanded and painted
New engin
new cabin sole
Some work on interior teak
new plumbing including new head
new air/heat control panel
some interior teak molding
new cushions
new engine controls (also a re-do from using a cheap product of unknown brand)
some teak around the engine panel in the cockpit
bottom paint
standing rigging (without spars)
re-do canvas (sail covers and bimini--considering dodger)
I am considering up grading the traveler, adding cunningham and boom vang. That said, I hate to mess up the traditional look of the boat.
I think I have had Saga since about 2006, she has:
New wind indicator
gps
depth (redone)
speeed (redone)
anometer
seacocks serviced and parts replaced
mid-ship cleat/chock installed in toerail
halyards
sheets
dock lines
stainless anchor, chain and line
fenders
radio
canvas (needs new bimin)
bottom paint
rewired
new 12v electrical panel
added 110v outlet
added 12vplug
solar panel
110v battery charger
rotten and/or worn exterior teak replaced
compass
batteries
lifelines
bronze fairlead replaced
Name/hailing port stickers
Stainless vent (not installed)
Life ring
Life jackets
bilge pump (elec)
gusher manual bilge pump
cutlass bearing
fire extengishers
st2000 autopilot
portlight gaskets and hatch gasket
new baramoter and ships clock
new alchol stove
new nav lights, to inclue tri-color/anchor/strobe
And best of all: Bronze portlight screens
There maybe other upgrades but I cant remember any more
Then all the exterior teak needs sanding and new finish.

Well done Trapper,
"Saga Blue" will thank you for keeping her in her prime.

Re: CD 25D refits
I know what I forgot from the since 2006 refit: new teak eyebrows and new teak around the companionway top hatch and new teak runners for the companionway hatch.
otherwise, she is pretty original 1985!
