Here's the setup on Raven. Can't claim any credit; the boat came this way from PO. Traveler is the original Nicro system.

Should I buy the traveller?

Post by Troy Scott »

Folks, My traveller looks like the photo of the one on Raven, except that his sheaves appear to be aluminum. Mine are (sigh) plastic. Was this system standard, with the blocks for pulling the mainsheet to port or starboard? Or was this an upgrade? Considering that I have this, would it be worth one or two boat units to do the upgrade like John Danicic and others have done?

Of course there is still the issue of the plastic sheaves. I've had many of these shatter unexpectedly, including four at once during an accidental jybe (another story).

IF (big if) I keep (after improving) the system I have, where would I find replacement sheaves? And what magic is required to install them?

I'm secretly lusting after John's setup, but like most of us these days, I'm of a budget. Isn't "budget" a four-letter word? Maybe I've misspelled it.....

Troy:

I am still working on my set up. I got the towers and traveller mounted the last time I was up but still need to install the direction reversing down blocks and clutches. I thought I would do that after I take off the cover and get the dodger on. That should be June 2, which is put in day up in these parts.

It looks pretty good so far though I worry that the travel distance is tighter then the original Nico because the car is much longer and the end blocks take up a few inches on either side. I am confident that the windward sheeting will be fine but a rousing good sail will tell the tale.

As far as cost is concerned, I am under a CD36 boat-unit which, for such a major addition, is not bad.

I will post photos and results after that happy day.

John, you obviously have no idea how excited I am about experiencing (and probably copying) your fully tweaked new traveller setup. Please keep me posted, and send photos! And don't be surprised if I show up at your slip in my sailor suit!

And another thing

Post by Troy Scott »

Folks, what about the staysail traveller? I never hear anybody talk about that. Is it just fine "as is" with the manual stops? Or does it benefit from some upgrade that I've not heard about? It certainly would be a long way to run control lines to the cockpit. I don't even do that with reefing lines (well I USED to, but that's just too much clutter.) I've learned, as I approach the ripe old age of 60, to just keep it simple. Thoughts?

Just did that, pictures coming soon. We used Garhauer again. We
also eliminated the weird "A frame" sheet routing and replaced all
of the stand up blocks. Our boat was just launched yesterday for
the season and our mast was stepped today. We will be busy
with the remains of comissioning and moving the boat to our
mooring over the weekend assuming this peasoup fog lifts.

staysail traveller improvement?

Anxiously awaiting pictures! Actually I'm fond of fog. Nutty, I know. It's part of that "alternate universe" idea I was playing with earlier.

new garhauer install

Post by jamesbuehner »

just putting this out there FYI; it will be awhile before Diapensia is launched but the lines leading from main and staysail will remain in place as they are unless serious chaffing happens against the turning block below the port traveler wheel....

Nice job Rich.

Did Garhauer make the stay sail traveller as well? Which model did you get?

Super paint job as well.

Yes, it is a Garhauer MT-1CT. Most of the raised area of
the deck under the traveller has an aluminum plate encapsulated
in the glass work. When I ordered the new traveller I had the holes
drilled to avoid the original locations since several holes were
already stripped out. New holes were drilled and tapped on the boat for
mounting the new traveller. I also went to 1/4" screws rather
than the original #10's. Garhauer also did the custom bend to
match the curve of the deck.

The stand up blocks and deck organizer are also Garhauer.

Paint, deck repair and non-skid was done by Casey Yacht Enterprises.
Mike Casey and Ed Mitchell were great to work with.

New Garhauer Traveller installed and working. Thanks everyone for all your help and advice. More pictures here. Traveller

It wasn't too bad a job and the rewards were apparent on the first sail of the season last weekend. No more "making due" with the mainsails trim because of a reluctance to adjust the control blocks.

I needed to fashion teak wedge bases for the halyard lift block to fit the curve of the deck. The control lines run nicely under the dodger to the rope clutches in the cockpit
