Thanks for the detailed instructions. I know that changing the belts is supposed to be a simple operation, and I have been carrying a spare belt for a long time (perhaps too long, if it's dried out).
I've been very nervous about working with engines, even ones as simple as the 1GM, ever since I worked on an old MG that I bought in college for $250. To make a long story short, that little car ended up getting towed away for parts.

Thanks for the warning. Fortunately Creme Brulee's exhaust smoke is definitely black -- very, very black.

P.S. I won't be able to get back to the boat for a couple of days. If I'm lucky, one of my mooring neighbors will be there; there are two catboats nearby with 1GMs and experienced amateur mechanics.
