AwlGrip vs IMRON on deck

Post by RMeigel »

Ahoy,

Per the recommendation of Yankee Point Marina in Lancaster, VA, they painted s/v Pacem's deck with AwlGrip 2-3 years ago.

I have since been told by others this was a mistake and my experience shows this to be true for two reasons:

(1) AwlGrip is a softer paint than IMRON - it doesn't hold up for deck use
(2) I'm told that AwlGrip withers under standing water. Water collects in winter on Pacem's deck around the midship shrouds. The Awlgrip job shows a quarter size hole in this area revealing the original gelcoat. I've heard different explanations for this. The first is that the standing water probably was the source of the weakness. The second is that the deck underneath was probably not prepped correctly. The sources for each explanation did not know the marina in question, did not have an agenda in the matter and seemed pretty knowledgeable.

I recommend against AwlGrip for this purpose.
