Regarding the fuel shut off before the filter...I just clamped on a vise grips to shut off flow to change the Fram water separator which is aboard our 33. We have the Universal 30 5424 3 cylinder. Cape Dory ran the line inside a clear plastic chafe hose so I felt OK about pinching the line that way.
I had not changed this out for years but had good power and little sediment in the filter when I cleaned it. But it sure felt good to change out. Also did the spin off secondary filter on the engine too. Because we filled the filters as full as possible with new diesel, bleeding went really quickly. She ran fine for a long motorsail across Lake Superior last weekend so I humbly assume success.
I have heard there is an element screen to clean in the electric fuel pump too. I have not found this on my pump. anyone know more about this?
