I can't imagine why you would consider the Volvo at the same price. I have never had one, but there don't seem to be any love stories out there about Volvos and the cost of parts. A few die-hards, just like there are 4-108 die-hards, love them, but I believe that Yanmar powers a lot more yachts than Volvo or anyone else for that matter.
You are wise to follow your gut on yard competence. There are plenty of incompetents that put on a good show up front.
TexacoExpressLube just about killed my Toyota yesterday; they failed to notice that their automatic oil pump system was not using oil, just air. I guess they also didn't bother to wipe the old oil off the dipstick when they checked that, if they did. Fortunately, I think, the oil light came on in a few hundred feet and we rectified the nearly empty pan situation.
First rule after an oil change: check the oil yourself.

Hi Ken,
Many people I know have suggested similar thinking as you, but I have yet to hear anything but second hand info on volvos being bad, nothing first hand thats any worse then the stories you get with yanmar.
As for part prices, I compared, as that was a big concern, the prices for parts are very similar, higher in some areas, lower in others. This is something else I had heard from people, but found it to be false when I really looked.
Reguarding number installed, its actually my understanding that volvo has slightly higher sales then yanmar, we just dont notice it in the US since yanmar is by far more installed volvo in the US, but in europe volvo far outsells yanmar. Worldwide I think volvo is supposidly a bit more widely used.
The engine is attractive, its slightly smaller, more compact and a bit cleaner on the outside then the yanmar is. Its 4 cylinders rather then 3. Its a slightly more modern engine (the current version being only 1 year old). The dealer I am talking to is a dealer for both, has both in stock and I am literally looking at them side by side in the showroom. Pricewise not much different, the dealer has basicly told me he has no opinion on which is "better" and thinks both are great and of the same quality (built in factories pretty close to each other in japan too). The volvo also comes with nema outputs so all engine data can be shown on my plotter (though the yanmar can do this, its an expensive upgrade). And a small thing, but I really love the belt tension adjustment on the volvo, and huge standard altinator.
