Hi Dan,
I also use two 6 volt deep cycle golf cart batteries (Sam's Club at about $60 last time I purchased) These will out perform two 12 volt marine batteries (100 amp-hour each) by a considerable factor.
For starting I use a car starting battery. On our year long cruise in 2000-2001 we used no shore power at marinas. I had about 20 watts of solar power and the standard alternator on the deisel. We do not have refrigeration. I feel that pairs of 6 volt deep cycle batteries is the most economical way to go.
Hope this helps a little.
