This is a picture taken from a second story window in my house. Its of my floating dock in the inlet behind my house. The clear area in the ice to the left of the floating dock is through the efforts of an ice eater. Its gonna be real cold again tonight. This sucks!!

The point of the land to the right (Croton Point Park) is about 1.3 miles away and the land behind (Rockland Lake State Park) where the V in the hills is, is more than 2.5 miles away. All that white stuff is snow covering the ice. There shipping channel on the far side of the river, which is open, although it is difficult to see from this height.

Temps have not gotten above freezing for the past number of days, but the winds are averaging in the 15-20kt range with gusts above 25kts. CAPE DORY WINDS!
Tis to be bliss, if it were summer time.

I am telling you mates, just hang in there! I am almost out of firewood and therefore, Spring is about the Spring.

IF not, I hope someone can recommend a good divorce attorney (due to lack of firewood)

I thought I heard on the radio that ferry service between Ossining and Haverstraw across the river is suspended until further notice due to the ice? Is that true??

I'm wondering if you ever heard of the Oyster Bay-Stamford, Conn. ferry. The ferry passed right by where you keep SQN moored. The 12 mile route was pleasant in the summer, but a bear in inclement weather.

There was another ferry farther west which ran from Cow Bay in Port Washington across to New Rochelle, NY. Both ferries stopped running soon after the Bronx-Whitestone bridge opened in April, 1939.

Of course, Dobbs Ferry on the Hudson is worth a mention.

I admit I'm long in the tooth but not that long. I was aware of neither ferry. I do know that when they built the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, which runs from the south shore of Long Island to the north shore at Oyster Bay, the idea was to connect it up with a cross Long Island Sound bridge or causeway to Connecticut. The idea was to have as much traffic as possible avoid having to actually go through NYC to get from Long Island to places in New England. The Causway never came to pass.

Speaking of the B-W Bridge, there was an interesting factlet in the Notice to Mariners about a week ago. Seems that some construction on the bridge is lowering its clearance by about 5 feet. Vessels needing the full clearance are instructed to request assistance ... seems that stopping traffic and keeping cars and trucks off the bridge will restore the 5 foot difference.
