It's a Mystic Seaport production

Post by John Vigor »

Zeida, we got a video tape of the movie some years ago from Mystic Seaport. If you Google them, I'm sure you'll find it on their list. Or try http://www.mysticseaport.org

It's called "Around Cape Horn" and you've never heard such a thrilling, enthusiastic narration by Irving Johnson himself. It's a wonderful documentary that has everyone sitting on the edge of their chair, even landlubbers.

Cheers,

Re: The Irving Johnson Movie

It's on DVD, unfortunatly it doesn't appear to be available from Netflix. We saw it at the South Street Seaport Museum in NY where the ship Peking lives now.

But JV beat me and from better and less expensive source!

Yes. Here's a photo of Bruce which was snapped from up in the rigging (crow's nest) of the mainmast.

And he snapped this one from up there as well. That pool is only a little bit larger than a Jacuzzi -- you can't swim in it, just sit and soak. That's me in the pink shrit sitting by the pool.

Swabbed regularly....

The teak decks were cleaned regularly, I kinda felt sorry for the "swabbies" that had to crawl around on their hands and knees scrubbing it.

They were always varnishing or painting something somewhere on the ship as well.

Photos....

Bruce snapped LOTS of photos during our cruise -- over 600. To spare you from absolute boredom, he pared it down to just over 200. So if you have the time, nothing else to do, and would like to look at our photos, here they are:

<a href="http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... =slideshow" target="_blank"><img width="400" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... G_0043.jpg">
Click on the photo for a slideshow.</a>

OR

<a href="http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... r_Dec2009/" target="_blank"><img width="400" src="http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c349/ ... G_1618.jpg">
Click on the photo to see the album contents and just view the photos you're interested in. There are 11 pages of photos.</a>

Our cruise aboard the SPV Royal Clipper took place from Dec. 5th - Dec. 19th, 2009 first in the Windward Islands and then in the Grenadines.

Enjoy,

Video....by Bruce....

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Bruce shot a couple hours of video during our cruise on the SPV Royal Clipper. Here's the short version (8 minutes):

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOTKz4kmITk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed>

He didn't add any music to the video, so you'll have to be content to listen to the sound of the wind and the winches.

You'll note that we had alot more wind during the "sail-away" from St. Kitts than we did from St. Lucia; the hydraulic winches make alot of noise; furling/unfurling the sails on a modern ship like this is a lot easier than in the olden days; tacking and jibing are easier too; the ship is just as beautiful as those old sailing ships; the engine room is so spotless you can probably eat off the floor; Bequia is a cruiser's paradise; those masts are really high (197 ft); sunsets in the tropics are to die for; and Bruce has a sense of humor.
