I installed a Yanmar 2GM20F in my 27 footer eight years ago - (about $6000 and did work myself) I use a Michagan 3 blade 12x14. That's not a misprint its a 14 pitch and it is not a sailing prop (full sized surfaces). With more room a 13 or 14 inch diameter would be nice but I wasn't going to cut fiberglass. I have not noticed any thumping and have put hundreds of miles on actually 1000s.(2000 engine hours) I cruise at between 5 and 5.5 knots on about 1/3 gallon per hour. At top end the engine will run at 3550-3600 rpm and does not smoke.
I'm sure there is drag at low wind speed but anytime you're sailing near hull speed it is irrelevant.
Fair winds,
Loren
ps:for anyone who read my last post - I do know how to spell Oswego (sometimes!)

Thank You all
So , I will put the 13 hp Betamarine. The bigger engine will not push my boat any faster. Has anyone used or heard things about a Vetus Diesel (13hp)? I called them up for a price on the 13hp. The price is too good to be true. $4200.00 . They use a Mitsubishi. I would rather pay more for a better engine like a Beta.
