I almost replaced my tiller-don't know what I was thinking!
The more I use my tiller on my cd 28, the more I like it because at anchor, it cocks up and the cockpit is wide open. At one point I almost replaced it only to realize that a wheel would be unnecessary and eat up all the room. Besides, I already have wheel steering in my car!

In 15 replies I don't thing anyone has responded to the original post yet! I'll give it a try.
The vast majority of CD28's have tiller steering. I am aware of a few that have wheels, but don't know that any of them came that way from the factory.
CD30's on the other hand came with wheel steering by default, but they could be ordered with tillers. Based on for sale ads I would guess that about 5% have tillers.
CD31's and up had no tiller option as far as I know. Anybody know different?
As to the second question about how big of a job to replace a wheel with a tiller on a CD30, I have no idea but have wondered about that myself. Anybody done that?

Does anyone know any numbers on how many boats had tillers vs wheels?
How big of a job is it to replace a wheel assembly with a tiller on a Cape Dory 30? I know about weather helm considerations etc. but I would much rather be able to feel the pull on the rudder than be blissfully unaware of dragging the rudder through the water if my rig wasn't balanced.
