An ol' sailing friend of mine showed me how he was taught to stow the halyards. First we hooked the line to the bottom ring of a stanchion. Then looped the line around a life line. He brought the line up and wrapped it around itself going downwrds. Finally bringing it up and looping it through itself. This moving knot was tightened as you pulled up on it. The result was that there were no lines next to the mast and they were tight enough not to sway. Easily released, also. Surprisingly, most of the noisy masts and halyards are with live-aboards in my marina!
