They come in various versions, with and without covers, and with and without negative bus bars.
As for fuse protection - the one I'm planning is going to be 1 foot from the battery. I wouldn't consider fusing just it - I WOULD like to fuse the whole battery. If I were installing one further away, I would fuse it in keeping with the gauge of wire I'd be feeding it with.

They are available in many sizes, some are combination fused terminal blocks, others unfused. The feed wire must be of adequate gauge to accommodate the total current,(in AMPS) of all accessories it will be supplying power for. Of course the feed would be protected by a fuse, or circuit breaker at the panel.If you have an appliance on the branch, fuse it between itself and the block. Please check with ABYC recommendations for wire size, etc....I'm no expert.
If they can be located safely out of the way, where not subjected to damage, I believe a cover is not required.

With these,(and other references) you can safely wire anything.
