Some OLD photos - Onset, MA - 1999

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Bruce snapped these photos while aboard Herb Reinke's CD330 Innisfail during the rendezvous at Onset, MA in 1999. Digital photography and transfer wasn't nearly as good then as it is today. So please pardon the poor quality of these photos.

All 3 photos above are of the CD36 Swept Away sailing on Buzzards Bay on her way from Onset to Mattapoisett.

Current Commodore Leo and RA Ruth Ann MacDonald aboard Heather Ann and I think the CD 33 Wildings, was Tony Betz Boat??? Is that right Cathy? Anyway heading out into Buzzards Bay. Note the Railroad Bridge in the up position in the background.

Heather Ann with Bob and Paula Ohler crewing for Leo and Ruth Ann MacDonald.

My notes says this is a CD 28 and I remember meeting Neil Gordon aboard Liquidity (esp his dog). But I am not sure if this is him or not and as Cathy said, digital photography was fairly new at the time.

A close up of Wildings and Tony Betz. If that is the correct?

Bruce snapped this photo while he was crewing aboard the CD330 Innisfail. That's Chris Reinke at the helm.

This is the CD28 Serenitas owned by Paul Scribner at the time. Me and my brother Mike, and another fellow named Howard, were crewing on that boat.

As much as I enjoy seeing CD related pictures, those submitting really should take the time to reduce the file size of their pictures such that they will load in a browser in a reasonable amount of time. Many of these pictures are 700K and larger. They should be kept to under 100K unless someone wants a higher resolution version for print.

Cathy,
I recall you had a discussion higher up in this thread, thus the picture of the staysail club. Seems like a straightforward arrangement. One thing I noticed is the extra single block that the sheet passes thru. It does not add anything. I also noticed the two attachment methods for the single block and the double block onto the club, the "bale" that straddles the club width. I had used the same attachment for my mast head spinnaker on our old CD TyS, four screws. ONe of the screws pulled out and the bale broke. Of course the loading was not ideal, as it is in your case. I would suggest some method to share the sheet load across both locations instead of the load on a single point.

Awesome photos, it is sometimes very had to get a shot that feels out the mood. The sun reflection and sail close up do it for me.

Hi Kyle,

I agree, the extra single block doesn't add anything, but that's the way the boat came and we didn't see any reason to change it. As a matter of fact, the only things we changed that are attached to the staysail's boom, is the single block at the clew of the sail (that was added due to the new roller furling) and we replaced the single block that's attached to the boom pulpit with a double block. That new double-block handles both the sheet and the outhaul.

If I replace the double-block at the aft end of the boom, I can actually do as you suggested by using it, and that other single block, for the purchase rather than just the double-block. Good suggestion!

Boy, if that isn't the most eloquent reason for why we sail, I don't know what it would be. I call that communion at nature's church. Keep it up, Bruce.
