See http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplmisc/rpt1464.pdf for a paper on the ignifion of wood. Per the article, red oak took 20 minutes to ignite when heated to 180 degrees C. That's the heat of the wood, not the temperature of the source. Water boils at 100... is it possible to heat a teak bulkhead with an oil lamp to that point?Oswego John wrote:Three things are required for combustion; fuel, oxygen and temperature to the point of ignition.
The teak is the fuel. The surrounding air provides the oxygen and the proximity of the oil lamp to the fuel for a long enough duration just might be enough to raise the temperature of the fuel to the point of ignition.
Good place to buy oil lanterns at a reasonable price?

fuel on the fire
You forgot something in the "fuel" category, OJ:
The teak oil we slather on the wood to keep things looking nice is extremely combustible.

extremely combustible
In the liquid form. Once dry it really isn't. As long as the wood isn't too hot to place your hand on and hold it on the wood, there really isn't a combustion problem.

Light one of your old teak oil rags on fire after they've dried out and see what happens. I don't know the effect once it's soaked and dried into the wood, but I'm not sure I'd want to test it.

Really inexpensive but a Dietz
If you're still looking here is a site for a real inexpensive Dietz hurricane lantern. I just ordered one for use in the cabin. If you want I'll let you know about the quality once it arrives:
