Suggestions on Dropping Mast Appreciated

Post by Chris Reinke (CD330 Innis »

I will be hauling my CD330 for the first time this winter. Our yacht club provides an operator for the travel lift, but the boat owner is responsible for mast removal. The club has a moderate sized boom crane (manual) which the owners can use to remove the mast if they choice to.

My question is two part:
1 - Any suggestions regarding removal of the mast of leaving it up? She will fit in the travel lift if the forward shroud is removed so dropping the mast is not required. I had all my rigging professionally inspected last March so if inspection is the only argument then I may leave it up.

2 - Will the coach roof support the mast sufficiently without a forward shroud while she is hauled, and then replace the shroud once on the stands? On my previous boat (mast stepped on coach roof only and not to keel) I had to utilized my main halyard attached to a bow cleat to maintain forward mast tension.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I've hauled my CD33 twice now and had no problem with the mast. It was well supported by the coach roof -- one of the benefits of a keel-stepped mast. Also, the double lower shrouds help to keep the mast secure. The first time I hauled we removed the forestay, the second time we removed the backstay. The backstay was a little easier because we didn't have to deal with all that roller furling hardware. Either way works. Don't exactly know if the 330 is the same layout (with respect to the mast, rigging, etc.) as the 33 but I suspect it is. Hope this helps.
