Typhoon cockpit drain problem

Post by Jim Kingrea »

The cockpit drains on my 78 Typhoon "Nipper" are clogged. The problem appears to be that the rubber drain hoses to the shut-off valves have a kink in them. The drain is not lined-up with the valve so the rubber line has to make an angle to get to the valve. This angle seems to be the problem. Has anyone had a similar problem? Would a thicker wall hose be better? I plan to work on the problem this weekend and would appreciate any advise. Also is it very hard to take the valves apart and rework them?

Jim,

My cockpit drains clogged after I replaced the entire system with quality hose and bronze valves! Yes there is a bit of an angle where the hose meets the valve. If they are original they are probably gate valves, and corroding. To unclog mine I tried a snake and blasting through from the cockpit, even with a pressure washer! Only when I hopped in the water and took an ordinary gardenhose sprayer to the through hull from the waterside did it immediately unblock. Since then it has been fine, it was just the seeds of the tree near the dock. Good luck with yours. If your hoses are that kinked you may want to replace them. Let me know if you take that on.

Good Luck,

I read recently about the hoses used on our Typhoons...Seems they're a special type of hose that has a spiral wire molded inside to keep them from collapsing when making that funky bend (yes, that's normal). The author cautioned against using replacement hoses without the wire support. I suppose the "Where to find it" section has a source.

Bill Bloxham's message (linked below) contains a list of the West Marine part numbers you need. I followed it exactly: it worked great and saved a lot time. Thanks Bill!
