Well, The Honeymoon Is Over

Post by Oswego John »

. . . weatherwise, that is.

On tonight's news, I heard the weatherman say that today was the 41st day of above average temperatures. Over the weekend and yesterday, the temperature was in the mid 60°s, reaching for 70°.

Even though the air temperature tends to get low during the night, the lake's large mass contains the heat from last summer and influences the area downwind late into the winter season.

Well, guess what?. The lake's temperature has finally cooled down and we are now exposed to the *Lake Effect* that is imminent to all who reside in the lee of the harsh winter winds from off the lake.

Up to this point, we have received total snow measured in 100ths of an inch. Any snow that did fall, you could still see the grass above it and it would usually melt away by 10:00 AM.

Tonight, the snow machine will turn on. The weatherman cautiously predicts maybe 10" of the white stuff for tonight and another 12" for tomorrow. Wheeee. woo hoo That's more like it.

PS: Lake Ontario doesn't have a lock on this. This is a common occurence on all the Great Lakes and many other large bodies of sweet water in the wintertime.

You know deep down you really, really liked those 41 days of respite!
Been nice(r) this year down here as well. Last year it snowed here on Galveston 6" for Christmas morning (no one can remember when that last happened).

The illegals were out in mass searching desperately for signs of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the cajuns were knocking out wallboards, searching for those jugs of moonshine PaPa was said to have hidden behind them years ago, and the rest of the bunch went stupified for a couple of hours, then jumped on or into anything with wheels and tried to kill one another driving like LaLa-landers in the Sierras...and I swear this is the truth (I have pics to prove it)my wife went out at 6AM and built a huge snow-mermaid.

And me? I took the pictures, came inside, made the first hot buttered rum I'd had in years, okay I confess it was a in a beerstein, wrapped myself in the thickest blanket we owned and refused to come out from under it until three people assured me that the damn stuff was finally melting!<grin>

This year I went out back in my T-shirt and jeans, picked a fresh lemon, squeezed it into an icetea glass with ice cubes, poured rum into it till it scared even me, sat back, sipped and grinned and grinned and grinned!

Hey OJ,

We've finally got some flakes here in Olcott and the weather has turned brisk.

Thank God I'm a Yankee!

The funny thing about the lake effects is I live about 45 minutes north of John on Lake Ontartio and rarely get the lake effect snow. actually I get very little snow at all but I can regularly see the clouds to my south and refuse to drive through it.
