Mainsail question re. CD27

Anyone using or experimented with fully battened mains on a CD27?

Will be finishing up this season on a newly acquired '77 CD27 with a nice but "mature" normally battened main and I'm curious if the fully battened main approach can cure some of the "belly" sag experienced with older cruising sails.

Also wonder if there are any recommendations on a southern New England sailmaker who's done sail work for CD's!

The sag is caused from the fabric stretching. I'm not sure that battens will affect that one way or the other.

I got a new main for LIQUIDITY from Ralph DiMattea in Squantum, MA, a couple of years ago. Fall's a good time to buy!

I just purchased a full battened main for my CD25. I spoke to several Detroit area sailmakes while shopping. The reasons they gave me for going with the full battens were duriablity and less "flogging". I have heard that full battens give better sail shape. I've only been out twice with the new sail so I can't say too much about it. Nice sail though!

If your sail is origional equipiment it's 22 years old! It's probably streached out which accounts for the sag in the belly. A new sail with any batten configuration will fix that.

I have a CD28 and wanted to experiment with a fully-battened main before purchasing a new main. That way I'd kind of know the difference in performance. I had a sailmaker put in the full battens and then, after I sailed with them for a season, knew that when I ordered a new main, it would have the full battens. I installed a Lazy Jacks system to help handle the sail when lowering. The sail holds its shape in light winds when underway and is generally easier to trim. However, the sail is not as easy to lower in the tracks due to increased friction even though a track lubricant is applied. Care must be taken when flaking the sail on the boom so that the longest batten doesn't hang down and break.

I had a new Doyle Stackpack main made last season for my CD-27 and am very pleased with the performance and with the ease of handing the sail in all conditions. The comments about battens with traditional slides are something to consider. Doyle offered the Strong track and slide system, and I took their advice. I can lower the main by simply uncleating the halyard and letting it drop right into the 'Pack. Raising is just as easy; I only need the winch to tighten the luff as required for wind conditions. Reefing is also very easy. I highly recommend the Strong system to anyone contemplating a new mainsail.
