Classic Boat Rally for Typhoons

Post by Woody Norwood »

The "SBC" Classic Boat Rally will be May 3 - 10, 2007, starting in Savannah, GA, and ending in Charleston, SC. There are five sailing legs of about 30 miles each, up the ICW, plus a lay day in Beaufort, SC. Hence, S-B-C. Each night is spent ashore in homes or hotels (or, if you wish, in your boat at the harbor). Launch at Savannah Yacht Club, take out at Carolina Yacht Club. Limited to 20 participating boats. See the web site for details www.ClassicBoatRally.com .

Classic Boat Rally for Typhoons

Woody:

What a great event you have organized. I have enjoyed reading of both previous years adventures on your website and in the magazines. I'm cautiously optimistic that I will be able to participate this year with my Cape Dory Typhoon. Right now I'm awaiting new sails. I live just south of Savannah on the Ogeechee River at Ossabaw Sound.

I've made the trip southbound from Charleston to Savannah a few years ago as part of a longer trip from New Bern, NC down to Savannah. I'v wanted, many times, to retrace the trip back to Charleston. We were in a bit more of a hurry on the last trip. We made it from Charleston (Toller's Cove) on the north side of Charleston Harbor down to Beaufort, SC in just one day. The next day we made it down to Hilton Head. The third day was just a short sail over to Sail Harbour in Savannah.

Your proposed agenda is a bit more relaxed!

Perhaps you'll find some more interest from this board and other Typhoon owners. But, I love what you are doing and hope to be able to add my name to your list of participants -- at least for a part of the trip.

Mark

So far, yours would be the second Typhoon to sign up. The other belongs to Gerald (Jerry) Wadley, PhD, a resident of Beaufort who, coincidentally, needs new sails. Where are you getting yours? I'll advise Jerry. You will find this trip to be a total blast, with great sailing during the days and comraderie in the evenings.

We plan to register for this adventure. We have a Typhoon, #1655.

As for new sails, try Kappa Sails in Conn. He has cut us some fine sails for our Typhoon and CD31.

Woody;

I will soon be faxing you a registration for the CREAMPUFF, my Typhoon weekender. I read about the SBC in one of the nautical Mags, and it sounds like a lot of fun. I'll be trailoring her down from Hardiville, VA on the shores of the beautiful Piankatank River wher I sailed her yesterday.

Woody,
We also plan to fax you our registration for the SBC. What a great idea. Will have to work out the details of trailering the boat from Baltimore, Md. We have friends who live on the water in Savannah.

Typhoons take 1st & 3rd

Post by chuck carmichael »

Typhoon Weekenders took 1st and 3rd in this years Classic Boat Rally, a race from Savannah to Charleston in the ICW. Actually the race was terminated at Edisto, SC due to gale force winds from tropical storm Andrea. My congratulations to John & Nancy Martin on finishing 3rd on KNOTTY BOY. They had 2 individual 1st place finishes. My CREAMPUFF had the luck of finishing 1st overall.

This is a really well run event and a lot of fun. The organizer Woody Norwood deserves my respect and Admiration. He's also a great sailboat racer taking a 2nd on his Herreshoff 12 1/2.

From talking to Woody it sounds like the 2008 event will start in Savannah on April 17 and end at Charleston on April 24, weather permitting.

We had a lot of headwind this year with the Northeaster turning into a tropical depression. The Ty's can really go to weather. On the rare occasions when the wind went aft, KNOTTY BOY's spinnaker was out in front.
