CD36 Coaming Changes

Post by John Nuttall »

Hi,
I noticed in some photos on B. Chamberlin's web site (see relatd links page), that his CD36 has teak coaming boards. All the CD36s I've seen on the water have raised f.g. coamings, capped with teak (so does the Robbinhood 36 for that matter).
I assume there was a production change and was wondering:
1)Does anyone knows which year that occurred?
2)What other changes were made?
Thanks,
John Nuttall

John:
I have a CD36 ("Jazman, #68, 1982) which has the vertical teak coaming boards, however I am not ceratin as to when the design change to f.g. was made. Othe changes that were implemented in the CD36 include a "T" shaped cockpit (my does not have one), and minor ineterior chnges including hanging lockers, I believe. Most of these changes were minor, however, as the interior of Jazman is still very similar to that of the Robinhood 36. The Robinhood also added an addition portlight in the port side bulkhead.

If you are considering a CD36 , please feel free to contact me via this web site. I have owened two other Cape Dory boats, and have extensive experience in updating them, including rigging, electronics, etc., particularly on the 36.

John,
I think the changes happened between 84 and 86. There is the cockpit change, some tankage changes (larger fuel tank), and a much bigger head. The larger head is much more suitable for showers. In addition I think that there may have been a propane locker added. The Perkins 4.108 went out of production so I suspect that the RH36's have some other engine.

We have a 1983 CD36 hull # 90 that we bought in 1994. She has the teak combing and also the port hole in the cockpit (which we love). The major changes to the CD36 occurred around 1985 we believe. We don't have the T cockpit either. We like the pre-change interior! The smaller head isn't a problem and having the hanging locker in the V-berth is nice. Also we have 3 drawers in the main salon next to the hanging locker opposite the head which gave a shelf for the Force 10 heater that came with the boat!! The changes in the head removed the hanging locker in the V-berth & put it next to the hanging locker opposite the head in the main salon which eliminated the 3 drawers and consequently, the nice shelf. This is also true with the Robinhood 36.

This is our 3rd Cape Dory!! We bought our 1973 CD25 hull#17 in 1981,our 1975 CD28 hull #50 in 1985, and now our CD36 in 1994!!We are retired and plan to make a trip south on the intercoastal & to the Bahamas one year when we quit land-travelling during the late spring!!!We usually spend 3 months in the summer cruising the New England Coast from Connecticut to Maine and Robinhood is one of our annual stops. It's always great to see Andy Vavolotis and the old Cape Dory people still around up there!!! There was a Cape Dory Rendevous in Robinhood the first weekend in August this year with about 30 boats (including a few power). The first rendezvous since the 1989 rendezvous in Robinhood before Cape Dory went out of business.
