CD-30 or CD330

Post by Mark E. Zimmerman »

My Family is growing and my CD25 is too small, so I am looking for a good clean CD30 1982 or newer or a CD330. I would like to have a boat this fall to get ready by next season. By than we will have another baby in the family.

330s are hard to come by. CD made less than 30 and I know of three that were done in by Hugo. If anyone can locate one for you, it is Dave Perry at Robinhood Yachts. Dave is on vacation this week but you can give him a ring at 800-255-5206 the first of next week. It would be a could idea to talk to him before the leaves for the Newport Boat Show, as much broker networking goes on there.

If sleeping accomodations matter, keep in mind that Alberg took out the v-berth when he redesigned the 33 as the 330. The boat is much roomier below than a 33 but what you gain in goodies you give up in accomodations.

Mark - Where are you located and what is the maximum distance you would consider travelling to find a new CD?

Mark and Joe,

If Dave isn't available you can also try Dick Sciuto. He also works for Robinhood Marine Center in their Rhode Island office. He can be reached at 401-254-5096 or 800-621-1379.

Mark - I purchased my CD330 from a Dave Watson of Eagles Nest Yacht Sales in Charleston SC. Dave was the regional sales rep for CD and has sold over 500 CD (new and used). I had contacted him and indicated what I was looking for. He held my name for several months and then called me with a possible boat. As it turns out he had sold the boat to the original owner in 1982. He then resold it to the previous owner and finally sold it to me. He was very easy to deal with and accommodating to all my questions. I then made the trip from New York to Charleston after reviewing the pictures, price, accessory listing and multiple discussions with Dave. He arranged for me to spend the weekend aboard the boat and sail her extensively Saturday and Sunday. Prior to my return to NY on Sunday evening I signed the contract and left a check. Dave has a great policy of performing any upgrades or repairs for the cost of materials. I had radar, refrigeration and GPS added, plus all the lines were replaced - all for the cost of material only. Dave might know of a boat or one coming on the market. His contact information is:

I, too, purchased my CD330 from Watson. I have never dealt with a more unscupulous yacht broker and will never do business with him again nor will I recommend him to anyone else. If you'd like the gory details, drop me an E-mail.

Mark, I own a CD 30 (1976, hull # 9, ketch) in Annapolis and I may be interested in selling also. She's one of the early Alberg designs before Cape Dory cut back on some extravagances due to costs, s.a. 5 portals on each side, more interior teak, etc. Let me know if you are intereste. FYI, I just repowered her to a Yanmar 20 in fall of 98. Great move, in that the original 12 hp was underpowered in my opinion.

I agree the original engines on the CD 30 are under powered. I have a 1984 cutter. Engine still runs well, but was wonder about how much it cost to repower for future planning.
