How long are you in Pen Bay?

Post by Maine Sail »

We're heading that way next Friday and plan on getting to the Fox Isle Thorofare by Friday night. Unfortunately the "mates" will be at Grandma's house for the two weeks..

on our way south/west

Post by bottomscraper »

We are leaving Rockland today heading South/west, probably
stopping in Tenant's Harbor, then to boothbay and casco bay.

Working our way back to Buzzards Bay down the Maine/NH/mass
coast.

Amazing Maine

Post by Carter Brey »

Just returned home to NY this afternoon from a few days on the Maine coast-- working, unfortunately, with no sailing.

I've never seen such a magnificently beautiful cruising ground. Around every corner was a picture-postcard harbor filled with wonderful classic sailboats.

I had brunch with a family yesterday overlooking Rockport harbor. I counted 2 CD25's (one series II named Hunky Dory and one series III, couldn't make out the name) and watched as a CD30 (four portlights, bowsprit, a little too big to be a 28) with a brown sailcover motored out and then, for some reason, motored almost immediately back. It was abouot 10:30am on Thursday, if the skipper is reading this.

Met Bill Jarrell and hoisted a couple with him in Camden harbor as we covered a sketchpad with drawings and figures related to boats and rigging. The waitress was not impressed. An order of fried clams got her out of our hair. What there is left of it.

Sorry I didn't know you were around the corner in Rockland, Capt. Nemo. It would have been nice to shake your paw.

Cheers,
Carter

CLICK HERE to see our photos that were snapped aboard the Abramson's Loda May during the CDSOA Maine Cruise on Casco Bay and some snapped aboard Mahalo during our cruise with the Abato's on Penobscot Bay.

After spending a wonderful 4 days of sailing on Casco Bay with Dean Abramson aboard his CD31 Loda May and participating in the CDSOA Maine Cruise there, we headed over to Rockland on Penobscot Bay where we met up with Nemo's parents, Rich and Melissa Abato, on Sunday, Aug. 20th.

First we went to the Black Bull for lunch since we figured that Nemo would still be welcome there -- he was. Then it was off to the laundromat where I took care of laundry while the rest of the gang headed to Shaws for provisions. Then it was back to the boat where Rich had to make a couple of trips in the dinghy, in the pouring rain, to get all of us, our stuff and the provisions to their CD36 Mahalo which was swinging on a mooring out in the middle of the harbor.

Monday morning we headed out in a light but freshening wind which took us across the bay to Fox Islands Thorofare and we made our way to Perry Creek where we stopped and picked up a mooring, enjoyed the scenery and had lunch. After lunch we dropped the mooring and continued eastward through the Thorofare to Carver's Cove where we dropped the hook and spent a very quiet night. There were only 2 other boats in the cove.

In the morning, after Nemo had his walk ashore, we continued our trek eastward exiting the Thorofare then heading north then west and picked our way among the islands back to Pulpit Harbor on North Haven. It took us awhile to find a good spot to anchor but we found one and once settled watched as boats continued to enter the harbor. Everyone, including us, made at least 2 attempts at anchoring before getting it right. It's a beautiful harbor and it was another relatively quiet night.

Wednesday morning was windless so it was a motorboat ride back to Rockland. The wind decided it would be a good time to fill in as we approached the breakwater and blowing about 17 kts by the time we reached the mooring.

We had a great time and really appreciate having the opportunity to sail aboard Mahalo with Rich, Melissa and little Captain Nemo. Thanks guys!

Mahalo spotted in Christmas Cove

Post by Carl Thunberg »

Rich and Mellissa,

I spotted you at Coveside in Christmas Cove. I guess it was either Thursday or Friday. I tried hailing you on the radio, but no luck.

Sorry we missed you. From there we went to Robinhood, then
picked our way in the fog to Sebasco, then to Snow Island (wonderful spot) then today in the 5' messy seas to Portland.
We might stay here in portland another day before heading south, probably to the Isles of Shoals.

Nemo's dlog

Post by Troy Scott »

Rich, Melissa and Nemo,

I've thoroughly enjoyed the dlog. I plan to cruise Downeast Maine someday. I've visited most of those places by car, and I once sailed from Robinhood, so your dlog brought back nice memories.

If you see a Moody 47 named Sirius, stop and say hello, Jon and Jill are very good people and are in their first season as full time liveaboard cruisers, they are currently in maine for the summer.

I gotta say, I wish I was up there right now, still annoyed at myself for not getting past cape cod last summer.

Cruising Maine's Waters

Post by Oswego John »

Cap'n Nemo, Melissa, Rich,
(not necessarily in any special order)

I thoroughly enjoyed Cathy and Bruce's photos of the many beautiful Harbors, bays and rivers of Maine.

However, I was slightly disappointed by not seeing any shots of Cap'n Nemo and his crew on board the good ship Mahalo on it's Maine cruise. Bummer. (Maybe they were there but I overlooked them.)

I hear that Cap'n Nemo runs a tight ship. He's strict but fair. Say hello to him for me.

There are 3 pages of photos, make sure you click on "Next" or 2 or 3 at the bottom of the page of photos. It's actually easier to view the photos if you just click on the "slideshow" button though. But, there's only one photo of Nemo and, for some reason, none of any of the humans that were aboard. I do know that Bruce has a tendency to snap the next photo before it's had a chance to write to the media card (digital camera) which can damage the card. I do know that we did lose some photos but I don't know how many or of what. I guess we're lucky we have any. (Last year we lost ALL of our photos that were snapped between our home port (Morgan, NJ) and Jamestown, RI. Now THAT was really disappointing.) Anyway, here's the photo of Nemo.

Post by bottomscraper »

Since we're hanging out in Portland today, Nemo had lots of time to catch up on his d-log. New update at http://www.sailmahalo.com/Maine2006/NemoMaine.html includes a photo of Nemo bugging Cathy for more kisses.
