Casey,Does anyone know when Cape Dory began putting the bronze, instead of plastic in the port holes for the 25's?? I thought they were all bronze?
I asked the same question about a year ago when I got my '77 CD25- it has plastic the port holes. There was a recent posting of a '79 for sale with the bronze ports and from what I've been told Cape Dory started using bronze ports in either '80 or '81 25s. I assume they were available earlier as optional equipment thus explaining the '79 having them. Or... they could have been installed by the owner. There is a guy that has a business casting bronze and is interested in making them available cheaper than the original supplier- who still makes them also. All this info is available on this webpage, just look under suppliers or use 'bronze ports' as a key to search old messages. There is a world of wonderfulinfo on the old messages page. Good luck and havew fun. Regards,

A quick follow up. Use 'portholes' as key word in search of old messages. You will find more info. BillCasey,Does anyone know when Cape Dory began putting the bronze, instead of plastic in the port holes for the 25's?? I thought they were all bronze?

Re: bronze port holes on a 25????
There seems to be different styles of plasic portholes on different CD 25s, too. Mine has a long narrow one aft and two smaller ones forward. I'd be interested in converting to bronze, but I am quite sure the stock bronze ones for CD 25s would be too small.
Anyone know who makes such a thing. Also is there a way to change the color of the plastic strip surrounding the porthole to a darker color? Mine are white and I don't like the look. If they were black, I think it would help a lot. Can/should this trim be painted?

Re: bronze port holes on a 25????
Bill, I have been in contact with Richard of Newfound Metal. He is interested in making opening portlights as a retofit for those of us who are portlight disfunctional. I have a '76 with one long light in the cabin and two smaller ones forward. About 3/4 months ago Richard was inquiring about the diminsions of the varous model years.Does anyone know when Cape Dory began putting the bronze, instead of plastic in the port holes for the 25's?? His e-mail address is: nfm@olypen.com
If there is enough interest maybe he can give us a volumn discount.

Fabricated, rather than cast?
Hi,Does anyone know when Cape Dory began putting the bronze, instead of plastic in the port holes for the 25's?? I thought they were all bronze?
Perhaps the ports could be fabricated out of 1/8" sheet, rather than cast. Is it possible to use a circle shear to cut out rings of the proper diameter, then shear them in half to form the ends? Long strips could perhaps then be cut in a shear as well, and soldered to the half rings to provide the outer frames. The inward flange would then be just a matter of rolling semicircles in a roller to be soldered on as well.Long bands from the shear again could provide the straight parts.
Could it be done?
