CD27 unconventional repower- questions

Post by Don Marik »

Hello everyone, I'm a newby to the list with a question and I couldn't find an answer in the archives. The original Yanmar engine in the boat I'm buying needs an overhaul or replacement. I'd prefer to overhaul it myself but can't do it untill this fall or winter but I want to sail the boat this summer.

As a solution, and just for the summer, could I mount an outboard on the transom until I can o/h the engine? Is it even possible to mount an o/b on the CD27 transom? Also, can the engine/trans be pulled with the boat still in the water leaving the shaft in place?

I know that this is not the best solution and it will only be temporary so I can sail until I o/h the engine.

Thanks for your help.

Never seen one on a CD27 but I have seen yamaha 15 on a hunter 30 and a 9.9 on a columbia (crelock not payne) 28. Some folks shy away from putting a 15k motor in a 10k boat. Takes a beefy motor mount

A while ago I saw a 27 with an outboard for sale on yachtworld. It had a dedicated mounting bracket and to my eye, wasn't very attractive.

You can pull the engine while leaving the shaft in place but I wouldn't advise it. It's a tough enough job on the hard with a chainfall and stable platform.
