Back Stay Backing Plate Rust CD 27

I have had a rust issue in the backing plate for the backstay on my boat. I have each year, scraped away what I can, sometimes fair sized flakes, then treating with OSPHO and rustolium paint.

What I don't know is how to assess the extent of the "damage". Nothing is loose but the idea that there is rusting iron in the boat I continue to be concerned.

What experience if any does anyone else have with this problem? What fixes?

Hi Richard,

Because of rusting, I'm guessing that the backing plate is made of mild steel.

What is your back stay made of?
What is the turnbuckle and clevis made of? Different metals?
Is water getting to the plate?

Have you ever removed the backing plate and checked out the condition of the hidden side? If it is in sad shape, maybe consider to have a new plate made of a non ferrous metal that is compatible with the back stay hardware.

Sounds like you should disassemble backstay fitting and rebed.

This is a common problem with older Cape Dorys. If you do a search on the archives, you'll find lots of comments and discussions about fixing the problem.
