I started sailing about 7 years ago.
I have always loved the water, kayaking, fishing, canoeing, snorkeling...I got my first boat about 5 years ago, a sunfish, which was followed by a flying Junior, and now a cd 22.
I may be one of the few African-Americans on this board...I sail in part to have access to that which my ancestors could not--control of their destiny lived out on the water.

Well......
By the time I was three I was floating anything I could find in the toilet and playing "boats" although I did not realize it at the time. By the time I was four I was floating boats in the stream that ran through our yard. I would launch the toy boat and follow it as it flowed down stream. I went fishing with my dad in our old Chris Craft when I was four and was hooked on the water. Boating is in my blood. Really, my great, great, great grandfather was Sir Francis Drake the worlds greatest pirate. I guess that's where I get it from because I've been drawn to water since I knew stuff floated in it......
Alternate Reality
I was content living on the side of a western mountain with far reaching vistas, when my wife "urged" me to move back to the Northeast. What does a mountain sort of guy do when dropped into a heavily forested area with limited views. Go sailing of course, where the views are limitless (well almost). Now (the last few decades or so) I only want to visit mountains I can sail to.

Why Sailing
I grew up living on the St.John River and got into sailing /racing in my late teens . After that I was hooked. Always seemed to enjoy cruising when I was single and in my twentys . What wonderful weekends were had on a Tanzer 22.
Now older and I enjoy it even more so because of the type of boat . This is a take me any where boat and the ocean is a lot different than the river and there is so much of it.
Now as I get older I feel it is more important to seize the day.
Carpe Diem

I grew up on eastern Lake Erie. Dad had a small power boat. My parents would take us kids to the local marina for summer lunches/picnics. My dad always said that he enjoyed watching the boats. I figured that I would enjoy watching others watch me on a sailboat of my own.
At age 29 my wife and I visited her natural father in Seattle and sailed on his Passport 37. Upon returning home I purchased a small sunflower sailboat. I took her out on a windy October day on a small suburban lake and turtled her. With my hiking boots on, I swam/dragged the boat ashore.
Next spring I began crewing on Wed evenings in Buffalo harbor. c/c29, c/c37, J35, and now a Benny 40.7. Since purchasing my CD25 I am a cruiser at heart however I enjoy learning about sailing w/ an experienced race crew.
I take my dad out sailing now. I think he now enjoys sailing more than watching.
