WM Prop nut zinc - spun off!

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

I dove on Hanalei on Saturday just to see what was going on down there, and guess what? The West Marine prop nut zinc had spun off! When I put it on, I secured the bolt with Life Caulk, as others had suggested, but, we went in the last of April, and here it is two months later and the thing has spun off. It did not errode away, the bolt was gone too!

Does anyone have a way of securing this devil? Next time I will go back to the Perry Nut zinc, but I don't want to tackle that underwater now. Also, does anyone know where I can get a 1" #10 Perry Nut zinc? Thanks for your help....

Dave, I think your mind might have slipped there at little. It's not Life Caulk that you secure the bolt with -- it's 5200. I can't imagine that Life Caulk would work. On the other hand your zinc shouldn't have come off in two months if you had put nothing on there as most people do. Perhaps Life Caulk under water works as a lubricant? Using 5200 you still need the star lock washer and you have to tighten the bolt good and tight. The 5200 doesn't do anything until your zinc starts to decompose and the lock washer loses its tension. In the first few months while the zinc is new it shouldn't make any difference. The zincs are sold separately from the bronze nut.

Dave,
If you have the type with the bronze nut held on with a cotter pin and a zinc held over the nut with a screw in the end and a star washer then there is a trick. I lost mine the first year. The marina manager told me to strike the end of the zinc with a hammer after it was installed and then to tighten the screw again. Aparently there is some little bumps caused in the casting process that you need to smash flat. If not, they corrode away quickly and then you loose the preload on the washer and the screw backs out. I never use any sealant or 5200. I use a brace with the correct screwdriver bit in the end to tighten the screw. In the 5 years since I have not had any problem.
