Waypoint files?

Post by Bob Luby »

I just got a Garmin GPS48 along with the waypoint download program.

Night and day compared to my Magellan Meridian XL.

Before I enter alot of waypoints, are there any prefab waypoint files out there I could use or modify? It seems a shame to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.

I could use a waypoint guide, but if I do, and share the file (on this board perhaps) am I violating copyright?

Bob,
In midcoast Maine, I create many unique waypoints each summer depending on weather and hazards. The dividers and straight edge are tedious and time consuming tools when producing waypoints.

Last summer my sailing buddy came up with a Pentium Laptop and a copy of Chartview Pro and a Chart Kit BBA CD with raster scaned NOAA charts from Block Island to the Canadian border.

With the Laptop, the software and a data cable, we've got a waypoint creating machine, the likes of which we never dreamed possible. You can download waypoints or complete routes. Then, if you like, you can make the routes active and with the Garmin 48 connected and active, watch your boat, represented by an Icon, travel around the NOAA chart, giving you position, SOG, VMG, etc. It's good stuff.

We love it and have found it to be extremly useful, although, you need a laptop on board. We have a small inverter from Radio Shack that keeps our laptop battery charged.

Let me know if you'd like more info.

Craig--I've got a 27 too and been thinking about using charting software but I'm not sure where I would secure the laptop. Where exactly do you secure the laptop on board? Do you plug the inverter in the "lighter" socket or have you wired it into a circuit?

Thanks

Hello Bob

Somewhere in the bowels of my computer there is a file of waypoint listings. I cannot find the darn thing. I got it off of the net on one of the cruising sites, but have been unable to find it again. I even bookmarked it but cant find that either. I tried to do a search using "waypoints" but did not get the same page. I'll keep looking!

Am looking forward to seeing you (and all the other beautiful cape dories) in Onset.

Bill
