Galley Pump parts

Hello to all

I need to repair the galley pump aboard Rhapsody. It has the words "Whale" on it, but West Marine tells me that if it doesnt have a "whale" logo on it, then it isnt a "Whale". I really like the current pump, and would rather just replace some of the O rings etc... as opposed to buying a new one. The pump can be seen on hte pics page of my url.

Any suggestions???

Would it be possible to find O rings at the hard ware store?

I replaced the entire head area sink pump on my old 25D and I believe the supplier was a company called M&E Marine in New Jersey. They are the company that supplied the original parts and they still sell them. If I remember correctly, Dana Arenius was the one who got me the name and number. If he doesn't see your post you may want to e-mail him directly.

I think Dana's post was about a "Topsider" pump. My galley pump is different.

I had a talk today with West Marine and the "Whale Company". According to Whale my pump (galley) is no longer available nor are the parts kits. FYI for anyone with a similiar pump.

I have a Whale footpump in my 1981 CD28 and it doesn't have the current Whale logo on it either! It is a Mark II series pump and the current on is a Mark III! Probably the West Marine person wasn't born when the pump was made! I also have Whale faucets somewhat similar to yours in my galley, too. I found you could get then in black or white from the Whale-USA website. You can also get accurate information from Joe Mello at Whale on e-mail at: jpmclwhale@compuserve.com Whale-USA has a great website where you can call up the various pumps, see the component parts in an exploded diagram (print if you want) and see the information on the various pumps from the advertising area of the site.

Bill, FYI there is a reason that Whale has gone to the Mark III version of the pump. The Mark I and Mark II turned out to be unrepairable. When they were new they lasted a long time, but as soon as they went bad they were throw aways. You could buy a rebuild kit (pretty expensive)but often the kit wouldn't fix the problem or if it did it would work a month or two and you'd be rebuilding it again. They often cracked around the screws and if not there the case got warped so that you couldn't tighten them up enough to stop the leak. Whale tried to fix it with better plastic in the Mark II and although it was a little better it still happened, so they went to the Mark III which is the darker gray plastic. It seems to be better, but they all work well when they are new so time will tell. I'm guessing that Whale doesn't provide parts because they want to get these early defective ones out of circulation, and not have irate owners calling them up and complaining about their rebuild kits not working. You may be able to track down some O rings with a lot of hassle, but I think it will be a temporary fix if it works at all. After rebuilding my Mark I several times one year, I bit the bullet about 3 years ago and bought a new Mark III. So far it's been OK. I wouldn't screw with an old one, but that's just my opinion.
