Volvo Diesel fuel flow problem

Post by Randy Wolf »

This problem is on a 1975 CD 28. She's been out of the water for nearly 3 years. I purchased her this winter and just got her in the water. She started right up and motered to the dock. But now I'm not getting fuel through the system. I've vented both a fram fuel/water filter and the volvo fuel filter on the engine. I had hoped to move her from N.J. to the Chesapeake tomorrow. IDEAS??? to fix this problem fast? Or a work around. I'm thinking using an outboard tank for the trip and then having time to really solve the problem. The yard mechanic thinks i need a new fuel tank do to suldge.

I'm really NOT trying to be a smartass here but....

Did you check to see if the fuel tank shutoff is in the ON position? (I did this myself when I first bought my boat and never turned the dang valve off again...).

If there is no fuel in the filter(s), this may be indicative of a source problem.

Good luck (where you heading on the Chesapeake?)

Did you change out the fuel that was sitting in the tank for three years? If not, I'd bet that's your problem. You may have to start at the injectors and clean the system all the way back to the tank. But change the filters and try the outboard tank idea first.

Pump the tank and add new fuel, then change both filters(Don't try just one). I have the same engine and year. When the filters need changing, it will run for a short time then quit. Be sure after you do get fuel, to bleed at least a cup or two out at the volvo filter, it takes a while to clear.
Good luck
