I just received an Intrepid VHF radio with digital selective calling, GPS interface and emergency DSC message and position information to USCG capabilities, (I didn't go for the microwave popcorn option). In order to utilize the USCG notification feature I need a digital ID from the FCC (?), and since we will be cruising Nova Scotia either this summer or next I need an FCC license sooooo....
#1 Do any of you have any experience with the myriad of forms provided by the FCC for this purpose?
#2 Are my above assumptions regarding the digital ID correct?
#3 I seem to recall advice to the effect, ... add all electronic devices you may purchase to the FCC application now because any new purchase will require additional forms and fees. Am I dreaming?
Thanks in advance for the information.
Sincerely,
Lee

DSC Identification Number Question

Re: DSC Identification Number Question
Lee,
I don't really have any answers to your questions but you can probably answer them by following the link to the FCC home page. I think that you are right about wanting to put all comm devices on your license now so that you don't have to update it in the future.

Re: DSC Identification Number Question
Actually, I got a license for my radio about 3 years ago, and the
FCC form was reasonably logical and not too difficult to fill out, so
I don't think getting a license should cause much pain. If recollection serves, I got my Marine Radio license quicker than the couple of months it took to get my Ham License.
Icom makes a DSC add-in for my M58, so I asked a fellow at the Icom booth at a boat show about it. He said that I shouldn't buy it because the standards etc, for it had not yet been finalized.
( All the usual disclaimers apply )

Re: DSC - Update.
Bob,
I'm sitting here reading it right now! As you can tell it is a busy day at the office.
Thanks,
