Propane, butane or alcohol stove for a CD25

Post by Tom Foley »

I'm replacing the old alcoholpressure stove on my newly aquired 1974 CD25. Can any one discuss advantages/disadvantages of various types of stove? The stove will be used in the cabin and I will probably also buy a rail mounted grill.
Thanks

In my opinion, propane or CNG are touted as the safest, as long as you
practise safe operating procedures. Although both are heavier than air gases and would have a propensity to settle in the bilge I believe and have seen very safe installations. One suggestion would be to mount your propane supply in the lazarette running the supply line up the port side. Also, be sure to install a detector in the cabin just to be prudent. I am personally using a 2 burner portable butane which works great. When finished cooking, I remove the butane canister and stow it in the lazarette. Just my 2 cents worth. BTW. West Marine advisor has some very good info on building a system.

Propane installation should not be contiguous with bilge ..

CNG is lighter than air, but can still aggregate in an enclosed space to cause an explosion. Houses and apartments, which are far from air tight, have suffered natural gas explosions from leaks. (Once it is out of the bottle, it is no longer compressed, and behaves just like natural gas.)

The "standard" for propane installations on a boat is a locker that has NO continguity with the bilge (or other inside space of the boat), except for sealed outlets for the hoses. Furthermore, nothing else is supposed to be stored in the propane locker.

Hi Tom...

I don't cook much on Stargazer, so I have a Glowmaster single burner cannister (butane ??) stove. Cannisters last a reasonable time, and the stove is rugged enough (and portable) that restaurants and concessionaires use it. BassPro shops sell the Kenyon brand (same stove) with carrying case much cheaper then the chandleries.

Tom,
I'm also interested in getting a new stove for my cd25. I've looked at the Origo alcohol stove (works on a wick system vs pressure) and they look pretty good (but not cheap!). Would anyone out there comment or recommend this stove? Thanks in advance.

Tom,
I'm also interested in a new stove for my CD25. I've looked at the Origo alcohol stoves and they look pretty good- stainless, they use a wick system vs pressure (no flare-ups ?), but they aren't cheap! Would anyone out there have any comments or recommendations for this stove? Thanks.

If you're asking about the Origo, it really works great. I replaced the Kenyon on my CD-27 with an Origo; it takes 12-14 minutes to bring a full teapot to whistling boil. Starts quickly and safely with no alcohol smell and no appreciable evaporation if you remember to put the rubber seals over the canisters when you leave the boat. The pot holder gadgets (extra $) work OK but are a terrific rip-off.

On the down side, it was not exactly a bolt in replacement, even though the model I got (4000?) was touted as the replacement for the two-burner Kenyon. Had to enlarge the hole in the galley top a bit, and hack out part of the pot storage partition. This required a good power jigsaw and a lot of patience. It came out looking nice, but it took some ingenuity. Be sure to take accurate measurements from a store model and compare to your existing mount to make sure it will fit before you buy.

Bill,
I had an Origo 3000 (2 burner) on my CD25 which I sold last year. I loved it!. I mounted it to starboard with the gimbels. Got hot quick, safe, easy to light, great stove. My CD 28 has a non gimbled pressurized alcohol stove and it's a pain by comparison. Propane scares the hell out of me. That's like taking a bomb out with you when you go sailing.
Good Luck,

We have the Origo 2-burner & love it. No oven, but that's ok by me - I want to sail, not bake. We don't have the pressure type - knew someone who did that developed an undetected leak. They were making coffee when the boat burned to the waterline because the alchohol leaked down between their bulkhead & outer hull. Thus, we have your basic, fill it when you use it type. Works great.

Good Luck!
