New owner of great boat, hull #002, 1985; would like tocontact any owners association in East.Mfg indicates thespeed should be 12-14 kn; with 100hp diesel, my speed is8 kn; anyone with answer for difference?? hull #002 camewith 16ft. mast &steadying sail. anyone find sail useful?comments will be appreciated.

I have an '89 Cape Dory 28, Flybridge Cruiser w/ the 200hp Volvo diesel and a 4 Blade prop. I've owned the boat for 2 years and I love it, I think it's the perfect coastal cruiser for New England, where we live. I don't know of any Owner's associations in the East other than the one starting up in the mid-atlantic area. I'd be interested in joining one in the New England area. As Far as your cruising speed goes. It's about right for the CD 28 Trawler. The boat (built in 1985/86) with that engine and a 3 blade prop will never plane even though the hull is a

I'm in Narragansett Bay, RI with CD28 cruiser hull #190, 1989.
In the adjacent slip is CD28 cruiser hull #080, 1987.

We'd both have an interest in an eastern CD owners association.

I'm the original owner of #190, my slip mate is the 2nd owner
of hull #080 (was in Boston Harbor with the original owner
until this season). Both hulls were sold through Standish Boat Yard
in Tiverton, RI (just down the street, so to speak, from Taunton)

While I'm posting: does any CD28 cruiser owner reading this have
trim tabs, either factory or post-delivery installed? If so, how
useful/effective have they been for you for any purpose?

I have a CD 30 flybridge, with tabs. I also had them on my previous boat, a Bayliner 25.

I would think that almost any planing boat would benefit from tabs. At low to medium planing speeds, I can usually get a knot more out of the same RPM by trimming the bow down. Tabs are also helpful in adjusting for sea conditions - sometimes you get a softer or drier ride by putting the bow up a little.

Of course, the 28 and 30 have different hulls. The 30 has hard chines, the 28 has a rounded bilge. So I don't know if that makes a difference with respect to tabs.

If you 'ballpark' the numbers, with the engine in your boat you just can't get enough Horsepower to the water to make the boat go 12 kts, which is it's approx. planing speed. This past summer, while visiting M'Vineyard with our boat, We met a couple with an CD 28 Trawler, and were having the same discussion. He told me he does 8 kts cruising and 10 kts on a flat calm day. Repowering is a pretty expensive way to get a couple of more kts. I think I would try a Four Blade prop, but be carefull about under rev'g the engine.

My 1989 Cape Dory FB is hull #184.The boat is in Georgetown S C. I know of 3 others in S C. Please give me more info on the mid Atlantic assoc. Why not an east coast powerboat assoc?
