RESPITE has been planted for the winter.

Post by M. R. Bober »

On Friday 11/11 at nearly the eleventh hour (EST), the lads at the yard hoisted RESPITE as easily as they might a butterfly. Unlike years past, the weather was, in a word, swell. I worked at the winterization process in shirtsleeves and was quite comfortable.

Thus far: Engine oil & filter changed; Seawater cooling flushed & refilled w/ 50% antifreeze;transmission fluid drained & replaced.
Fresh water system drained; Hot water heater by-passed;all lines filled with that good tasting pink antifreeze; all faucets "run" pink. Shower sump pump line flushed and filled with the pink. The head is similarly in the pink.
All sails have been relocated to a heated facility. Halyards have been replaced with messengers. CQR removed from pulpit and stowed.
The first seacock has been lapped (it's the only one that needed the attention) and has been cleaned and regreased with Spartan's finest.

To be done: Check for possible leak into anchor rode locker; Fuel filter replacement (spring time), swap yankee halyard shackle end-for-end;take two dodger panels to canvas shop for minor repair; repair a few minor hull blisters;replace head;clean & regrease the hard-to-reach seacocks; Cetol; redo boot top;apply bottom paint;clean & wax hull; hope for an early spring.

Ah sailing

Every best wish to all from the Maintenance Department!

Splendid Splinter was hauled out Monday...
Mike and I motored down the creek Sunday to deliver her to her winter roost for haul out Monday. What a gorgous November day --it felt more like Spring! I hope the weather holds till the weekend so we can get back over to cover her before the wind turns blustery and cold!

Only wish we had, had the time to head out to the BAY first, for one last sail for this season. Was monoriting the radio while we were motoring and it sounded like those that were out were having a phenomenal time 13-17K and temperatures in the 70s can't beat that for November in Maryland!

Thanks for running the check list for winterization! I've already began to look forward to the upcoming winter fleet meetings! See you there.

Oh Mitch,

I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed your light hearted account of one of the more traumatic days many of us must face each Fall!
Not to mention the winterazation check list you inadvertently provided.

Get through the Holiday Season and then start THINKING SPRING I'll be watching for your 'Spring Commissioning" article!!!

Avoiding winterizing

Post by Jack & Jo Chamberlain »

Not to rub it in, but Maggie Rose has made it to Charleston, SC. We will stay here up to a week, visiting relatives, sightseeing, and catching up with ourselves. Our "do" and "get" lists had grown to the point where an extended stop was justified. Seventy degrees at 0900 this am. Cold front expected late today.
We're really enjoying having no schedule and the unbelievable run of good weather we've had.
