CD25D Dodger

Post by Jim Jamieson »

Does anyone have a dodger for their CD25D? Does anyone know who makes a good one and how effective they are? Any information will be appreciated.

Jim,

I had dodger's made for both my CD22 and my CD30 and never regretted the expense for either of them. Both were custom made by the most recommended sailmaker I could find who made dodgers, I really recommend you crawl around your local yards and marinas and gather some recommendations to find a guy who can fit one to your boat really well.

The newer dodgers here in the Bay Area often come with stainless steel hand holds on the aft edge of the dodger and along the sides to help move along the side decks. I really recommend that. Also, my Northeast made dodger was made with no provision for a cover for the clear window parts, wasn't a problem back there, but out here where the boat is used year around, the clear windows have fogged up from sun damage in only a couple of years, I really recommend talking with the guy who makes yours about having removable covers made to provide sun damage protection.

Good Luck,

Jon

Jon: I had a CD25D and installed a dodger which was probably the best investment that I made. It extended the sailing season and actually got some people aboard who generally would stay ashore. I believe the vendor was Island Nautical. I do not know if they are still in business. Bob

Jim,

Dodgers are very effective for a number of reasons.

Personal protection from spray and sun, especially if you have a tiller with allows to you sit fairly forward in the cockpit like the CD25D. I had a very good dodger built for me by Thurston Sails in Warren, R.I. (Steve Thurston). I have had it for 11 years now and I am just now planning to replace it. My boat is a CD26 which has the same coach top as the CD25D. The things I like about the dodger I have is.....The side panels are removeable and are mostly all see thru...the forward section of the dodger is mostly all see thru and there is a center roll up window to allow air to come thru on warm days....the dodger "bows" are all stainless steel.....the zippers are of excellent/non-sticking design.....the back edge has a zipper which allows the attachment of an optional rain canopy which also has side curtains. I had bought this option to enclose the cockpit area when anchored during rainly days. I have found this dodger to be more heavily built and generally much better looking than most I have seen.

As a general note.....Sun damage (cloudiness) can be completely avoided by the use of household dusting "Pledge" spray. You use it just like Windex and the plastic will remain crystal clear.

If you think you want to see what my dodger looks like, I have a picture of the boat in "JPG" format that I could attach to a E-mail to you (if your e-Mail program will accept it). Just let me know.

Dana
