I would like to know what size Zinc goes with the Universal M-18. Also, where on the engine does it go?
Thanks in advance

Re: Universal M-18 Zinc
you should order a service manual comes in handy.Westerbeke bought Universal some years back and i don't know who you would have to call for it ,good luck.Gary McDonough wrote: if your m-18 is fresh water cooled ,there is a heat exchanger mounted at the aft of the engine. it looks like a tube about 3 inches in diameter a foot or so long the zink is screwed into it ,i think the zink is called (a pencil zink),and it is only about 2 inches long.

Funny that you should ask. I am having a new heat exchanger built by SEN-DUR as I write. The zinc is on the port side of the engine facing straight down. One must be a monkey to get at it, at least on my boat.
A couple of years ago I installed a zinc in the raw water circuit between the pump and the heat exchanger. I think it worked but not well enough. I recently read on this board where another M-18 owner replaced his heat exchanger also after about 15 years service. My zinc has never been changed from the git go. Well, there it is. When I install the new exchanger, I still will not be able to check the zinc so I will rely upon the one in the raw water circuit. I have a CD-30B cutter built late in 1985 which has spent it's life in the salt water in SW Florida. It is hull # 358. Good luck.....Marv

Re: Universal M-18 Zinc
Gary,
As others have said, it is a pencil zinc, the zinc itself is about 1/8" dia. and about 2 1/2 - 3" long. The wrench for it is 7/16". It is located in the port side of the heat exchanger and can be reached from the cabin with a little acrobatics. The zinc should cost about $2.50, don't get it from Universal, then it would cost $5! Once you change it, you'll know how easy it is, and then there's no reason not to change it every year. Hope this helps...
