Battery location - CD-30....

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

I installed an Atlantic T6E waterheater on Hanalei this weekend. Had to relocate the batteries to the small shelf aft of where they were. This places the weight of the batteries and the waterheater outboard of ships centerline, not the best location. While working in the starboard lazzerette, I removed the board that provides access to the area under the cockpit sole. Lots of space in there! I was thinking of making a sliding, removable, shelf to place the batteries on and slide the batteries into that space. Has anyone done this? Will it work? I know some have cut a hatch in the cockpit sole to provide access to this area, but, I don't want to do that as I feel it would just make another leak path. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Dave,

I believe the layout on my 1977 CD30 is quite different from yours. I have a YANMAR YSB12 engine mounted in reverse with a v-drive. My batteries are on shelves outboard of the engine. They are accessed through the cockpit hatches by sliding them aft off their shelves.

I use the area under the cockpit sole for working on the engine. I get there through one of the cockpit hatches. If you put equipment in this area it would hamper access to the engine.

Re: Olli, I have Universal 18...

Olli,

Right you are! Hanalei has the Universal 18, 14hp diesel with a straight driveline. The only time I need to get in there is to check transmission fluid once a year, align the shaft/engine, and adjust the stuffing box. I would make the sliding shelf removable to allow access in the normal fashion.
