Just purchased a 1983 CD 31. Surveyor advised having the original Universal 3-cylinder removed, cleaned of extensive rust and overhauled (oil pressure is low at idle). For just a little more I can purchase a new engine. Good idea?
Am considering a new, 3-cylinder Yanmar. Has anyone experience with this engine? Would it be a good choice over another Universal?
Opinions and advice apprrciated.

I have only had limited experience with Yanmars, but the two cylinder Universal M-18 that I have on my CD-30 is great. It sips diesel s-l-o-w-l-y and is simple to work on.
If you bought another one you could justy drop it in place...maybe.

The Yanmar is a great engine, but know, that the Universal is really a Kubota, which also has an excellent reputation. As Jay suggested, by a new Kubota and just "drop it in."

A friend of ours replaced his old, tired engine with a new Yanmar. Everything that attaches to it had to be replaced as well -- the transmission had to be replaced and a new engine exhaust thruhull had to be not only replaced but installed in a different location and the old one removed and that hole repaired. The new exhaust thruhull was larger, so you guessed it, the hoses had to be replaced too. He did all of the work himself.
At the same time, we had our Westerbeke 21A (21 hp) totally rebuilt by the yard. (We also contemplated a new Yanmar (25 hp).)
Hank spent around $5000 on his upgrade, but he did all of the work himself (his boat is also home built). And he spent quite a bit of time on the project. Our engine rebuild also cost us $5000, but we had the yard do it. It would have cost us more if we had the yard install a new engine which also required replacing all of its attachments.
You have to decide whether you're going to do the replacement yourself or have the yard do it and way the advantages/disadvantages and cost.
