Great Lakes Fleet - Sail Oswego, NY - August 6 & 7

Post by s.v. LaVida »

The Great Lakes Fleet is proud to announce its first "Sail In" of 2005 in Oswego, New York.

There are various areas to stay in Oswego (Southeastern shore of Lake Ontario) and some great cruising grounds, right at hand.

If you want to travel by car and join up for a sail, on some GREAT CD's, just drop me an email and we'll arrange a berth.

Fair Winds and GREAT Sailing,

Mike

Mike, we're going to have to pry John Dunn away from his job as Master Schooner Builder so that he can get behind the wheel of a CD. Maybe even have to force him to have a CDC (that's a Cape Dory Cocktail - usually beer). Maybe we ought to make plans to whisk him away from his toolshed before he gets armed.

John,

Any suggestions for berths for our CD GLF when we arrive.

With the loss of Carol at the International Marina, I've lost my desire to be any place special.

Your thoughts would be most appreciated. BTW when is Harbour Fest?

Sea U,
Mike

The city run marina at Wright's Landing is nice. There's no power or water but it's just off of Breightbeck park and within walking distance to most west-side restaurants. They rent transient slips.

Harborfest is the last week-end in July.

BERTHS FOR FLEET

Post by Oswego John »

Yo Mike'

Do you believe in ESP or coincidences? As you were writing your last post, I was on the horn seeing what I could find out. If I can dig deep enough into my magical bag of tricks, I just might pull out a plum. I can't promise you anything at this early date, but let me do my thing and let's see what happens.

As for Harbour Fest, it is held the last week of July. This year it is Friday through Sunday, July 28 - 31. Fair warning, do not, I repeat DO NOT think of sailing into Oswego Harbour during this time. It is an unbelievable zoo, make that six zoos going on at one time, especially during the night of the always spectacular firworks display.

I shall be in touch with you privately the minute that I have some concrete info. Take care, have fun, don't take any wooden nickels. (I guess that it takes some explaining for the younger set to understand that phrase).

Everything else is practially done and awaiting launch.

Thanks for your help in finding berths, perhaps at the OYC?

Our dates of 6/7th will hopefully give them varmits time to clear out of the harbour, by the time of our arrival, eh?

We are looking forward to pulling into Oswego again and seeing ole friends.

Please keep everyone posted on your developments.

Thanks,
Mike

Oswego Maritime Foundiation has invited CDSOA members

Post by s.v. LaVida »

Thanks to the hard work by Oswego John, members sailing or driving to our GLF Sail In in Oswego will have dockage availability at the OMF.

A great organization and a wonderful spot to tie up.

If you plan on attending by boat, please let me know so that I can pass on the number of boat slips we will need.

If your driving, you'll surely have a spot on a CD deck to hold a cold one!

Plenty to do and see around Oswego!

Post by s.v. LaVida »

I'm keeping this topic open so we can stay on the top of the board and broadcast our Sail In.

There are many historic locations in and near Oswego, including the start of the Oswego Canal, which connects with the East-West Erie Canal sough of Oswego.

Oswego is a real maritime town and one not to be missed.

"Whippoorwill" and crew will be passing through Oswego in August but its likely we will miss the party by a few days. We will move aboard in late June in Maine and head for our home port in Chaumont Bay, Lake Ontario which will complete our 2 summer adventure out the St. Lawrence, around Nova Scotia and back to complete the loop. If the weather is favorable we may join the get together on the 6the and 7th.

Fair winds,

GLF - Sail, Oswego

Post by Oswego John »

Hi Mike and all,

I spoke recently with Dr. Henry Spang, Director of the Oswego Maritime Foundation (OMF). He asked me to cordially welcome the CDSOA GLF and he is pleased that we can avail ourselves of the OMF facilities.
There will be no need for anchoring or mooring in the harbor. No dinks or prams will be necessary. We will tie up directly to the OMF docks.

The OMF also will provide us with the full use of the facilities, which include rest rooms, showers (trying to complete them ASAP), Paved, roofed pavilion for protection from the elements, barbeque grills, picnic tables and benches and telephone. We would be glad to give anyone a tour of our schooner's construction in progress.

There will be a nominal, VERY nominal, charge to help defray expenses. There are electrical plugins for those that desire them as well as fresh water.

There is a Great Lakes museum a hundred yards walk from the facilities. The queen of the museum is a working USN seagoing tug. It was part of the D Day invasion and has a swastika painted on it's stack. It's supposedly the last tug of it's class in existence.

There is ample parking for those that would like to drive here by auto. There are many fine motels and inns nearby that charge country, not big city, rates.

Although there are many fine restaurants nearby, it is only proper that I must warn you to not, I repeat, DO NOT go to Colemans Authentic Irish Inn and Pub. Tsk, tsk, the patrons in there are so rowdy, singing songs at the top of their lungs, clinking pints all throughout the night. And the music, a poor soul can't concentrate with all the foot tapping and other tomfoolery going on in that place. Tsk, tsk. It's only two blocks from the waterfront. Fair warning. BTW, Ed Haley says he only goes in there for the great corned beef. Yeah, right.

So Mike, all systems are GO. Lets all have a great sail (drive) in. Do you have any pull with the weatherman?

Morning OJ

Post by s.v. LaVida »

Well systems are not quite all go. Still awaiting fabrication of a custom waterlift muffler, once that is done, I'm ready.

Its been a long refit and I'm REALLY looking forward to splashing on the 20th of June.

Please pass on our thanks to the OMF for your hospitality, its much appreciated.

As for the weather, over the years I've always found a cold pint at Coleman's after having been chased in from the lake by some nasty bits of weather, so I don' t know my pull :-)

Sea u,
Mike
Monaghan for M. Ritenour

Crew wanted

Post by Monaghan for M. Ritenour »

Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds all of you well and enjoying the First Day of Summer.

Quick note regarding our launch.

LaVida's new systems (including a new Volvo engine) checked out today and we are launching this Thursday.

Jesse Ray and I are departing Olcott around the 26th of June for Clayton, NY (on the St. Lawrence River and in the Thousand Islands). Clayton is the home of a very famous boat museum and a pivotal point of the Thousand Islands.

This is an overnight sail to Main Duck Island, then down river (about 18 miles) to Clayton where we will undergo a couple of days of final engine installation. Clayton is a neat port call and Alex Bay is just down river, overlooks Boldt Castle a fascinating place.

From Clayton, we will return back up the St. Lawrence River stopping either in Kingston, Ont. or Oswego, NY to Olcott. The whole trip taking about 6 to 7 days.

This is Eastern Lake Ontario sailing grounds at its BEST!

We have one crew berth available on the East and West legs.

You can do either one leg or both. All you have to do is get to Olcott and we can pick u up at the airport or within a reasonable driving distance.

First volunteer gets the berth.

Please call me directly if your interested.

Sea U,
Mike and Jesse Ray
